Vaccination
Vaccination is an important tool in the prevention of potentially fatal diseases in all species of animal.
I've just got a new pet. When should I get him vaccinated?
Puppies and kittens can start their vaccination course at around 8 weeks of age. Our regime is one injection at 8 weeks and another at 12 weeks. This is followed by boosters every year.
What diseases are covered?
My granny's dog never had a vaccination and lived until it was 18. Why should I bother getting my pup vaccinated?
This is a question we sometimes get asked and it is a valid one. There certainly have been cases of animals living long and healthy lives without ever having been vaccinated. However, there are also many cases of dogs or cats dying from diseases that could have been prevented by a simple injection. For this reason we advise vaccination for all new pets.
My pet hasn't had his booster for years but I want to renew his immunity. What should I do?
If your dog or cat has missed a few boosters or is more than six months late for his booster, we recommend starting from scratch with the initial course of two injections to give good immunity. Please call us if you need advice on this subject.
How long before going to kennels does my dog need her kennel Cough vaccination?
Generally, we recommend vaccination for kennel cough about 2 weeks before going in. However, in cases where the dog may already be ill, this advice may vary.
Does my cat need any extra vaccinations for going into the cattery?
No. If she is already up to date with her yearly booster, she can go ahead in!
Will my pet experience any after effects from the vaccination?
In most cases, there are no after effects at all. The vaccines we use have been stringently tested and are safe in most cases. In some cases, your pet will be a little off colour and sleepy for 24 hours after injection. This is generally nothing to worry about. However, if it persists for more than a day, let us know.
In very rare cases, some animals can be allergic to the vaccine and can have an adverse reaction to it. If your pet is sick, very tired or has any other unusual symptoms, let us know.
