Dog Neutering & Cat Neutering, Ards & Comber Vets

Extend Life and prevent straying in both cats and dog. November is neutering month at ards and comber vets!

For the month of November, we are offering reduced price neutering for dogs and cats in Northern Ireland. Neutering is a routine procedure which is done in the majority of young pets for various health reasons.

The primary reason is to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens but there are also many good health reasons for having ‘the snip’.

In male cats, neutering prevents the change from cute playful kitten to smelly aggressive tom. It reduces the incidence of smelly urine spraying and makes them less likely to fight and stray- resulting in extended life.

In females, the obvious benefit is the reduction in kittens. A female cat or ‘queen’ can produce 3 litters a year, resulting in up to 20 kittens, which are then fertile from about four months old. While everyone loves cute kittens, our local rescue centres are full, so the advice is don’t breed, adopt!

With male dogs, a lot of the reasons for neutering are behavioural. For example, if your dog develops territorial aggression or has a particular sexual attraction to your leg or sofa cushion at about six months of age, neutering should sort that out. Also, by removing the testicles, it removes the risk of testicular cancer in later life. Again, it also makes them less likely to stray. A male dog can smell a female in heat for nearly a mile and will do all he can to get close to her for some romance!

With females, neutering at 6 months will reduce the risk of mammary cancers later in life and will remove the risk of developing a potentially fatal womb infection called pyometra.

This condition manifests itself after a heat ends and produces a nasty discharge and hugely enlarged uterus. The treatment involves neutering at that stage so prevention is definitely better than cure!

November Neutering Save £20 in Dogs, £10 in Cats!

Generally we will neuter cats from 4 months old and dogs from 6 months but there are a few exceptions for certain cases.

If you would like to discuss your own pet, please give us a call. And remember that for November we are offering £20 off dog neutered and £10 off cats.
